Advocacy & Outreach for Women Veterans’ purpose is to support the MichiganVeterans Affairs Agency with outreach activities for the 44,000+ women of themilitary that live, work, and raise families in Michigan. Women are serving athigher rates than ever before and in combat roles, which leads to differentchallenges when transitioning out of the military. Women veterans are 2-4 timesmore likely to be become homeless than non-veteran women, are 1.8 times morelikely to die by suicide than non- veteran women, and 1 in 4 screens positivefor military sexual trauma. Women who have served in the military often do notconnect with their identity as veterans and in return, are not connected to thebenefits they have earned through their military service. The objectives ofAdvocacy & Outreach for Women Veterans are to educate the public and connectwomen to their identity as veterans, to benefits earned through service, and toa community that supports them. Outreach activities will include a variety ofcommunity events, conferences, retreats, and listening sessions statewide.
